
The Shanghai of 2010 belongs to the whole world. ‘Better city, better life’, the theme of the Expo 2010, displays a concern with urban life world-widely “Expo 2010 Jing’An International Sculpture Project” will be held from Sep. 1st to Oct. 31th 2010, which is organized by the People’s Government of Jing’an District, associated by the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination and Office of Shanghai Sculpture Committee, executed by Office of Shanghai Sculpture Committee of Jing’an District, Afforesting Bureau of Jing’an District and Jing’an Sculpture Park, planned by Purple Roof Art Gallery.
The Exhibition is an important large-scale cultural and art activity of 2010 Shanghai World Expo that covers the non-core area of the Expo. It is a large-scale and remarkable art and cultural activity for public held in the center of the city during the Expo.
Surrounding the theme of ‘City Fantasy’, the exhibition designs three parts – ‘Fantasy’, ‘Memory’ and ‘Life’ to show the past, present and future of Shanghai. The main venue ‘Fantasy’ is set in the Jing’an Sculpture Park, where sculpture works are displayed to represent the pursuit and imagination of ‘City, Nature, Human, Environment’ and interpret the cultural characteristics of ‘City’s Future’. The extended venue, themes of ‘Memory’ and ‘Life’ are designed to combine the sculptures with historical culture space and city public space. There are nine sites for the extended venue, namely, Moller Villa, Jing’an Villa, 800 Show, Wheelock Square, Jiu Guang Department Store, Park Place, Jing’an Park, West Gate Mall and Plaza 66.
“Expo 2010 Jing’An International Sculpture Project” can be rated as a world-class public art exhibition party because it not only displays the works of world-famous masters of public art, but also gathers the works of famous and new artists in the field of contemporary public sculpture art. The sculpture exhibition is planned by Purple Roof Art Gallery, with two curators: Huang Du, the domestic independent curator and art critic,and Menene Gras Balaguer, director for Culture and Exhibitions from CASA ASIA, subordinated to Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
International Jing’an Focus on City Public Art
“Expo 2010 Jing’An International Sculpture Project” is the pioneer of presentation activity of city public art in Shanghai, a platform to show the world the construction achievements of the ‘International Jing’an’, moreover, it’s a showcase to show the world the construction achievements of cultural industry and cultural development strategy of Shanghai.
Jing’an district, located in downtown of Shanghai, is always devoting itself to build an environmentally, culturally area and to create an image of a center in culture and arts. Public art promotes cultural and arts undertakings and becomes an important step to the urban cultural improvement. Adopting active cultural activities in Jing’an district, the cultural level are improving with additional art elements, just like what its slogan says, ‘Culture as the soul of the city ‘.
Based on the plan of designing and developing city cultural and public art, “Expo 2010 Jing’An International Sculpture Project” will be held by the government as the major public activity. This will foster the growth of cultural activities and its cultural image of Jing’an district. The exhibition will feature the cross communication of Chinese and western culture and the interaction of fashion and classics in Jing’an District. Under the way of combining business, traveling and culture, the Exhibition has created a classic and elegant human environment in Jing’an District. It will present the unique cultural charm and urban taste of Jing’an District from multiple angles. It enables the interaction of city vigor, cultural charm and city spirit, and provides cultural support for the objective of the construction of ‘International Jing’an’.
